Government levies 10% import duty on wheat and tur dal

The government today levied import duty of 10 per cent on wheat and tur dal with immediate effect. This decision was taken to protect the interests of the farmers. On December 8, the government had removed import duty on wheat, which was 10 per cent earlier, to encourage domestic availability of wheat and check retail prices. There has been no import duty on tur dal.

Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal has estimated that this decision will fetch revenue of Rs 840 crore for the government at the current level of imports.

This decision will help control the sharp drop in the wholesale prices of wheat and tur dal and maintain the support prices paid to farmers and increase domestic supply as well.

As per the government's estimate, wheat production is estimated at 96.64 million tonnes in the 2016-17 crop year (July-June) as against 92.29 million tonnes in 2015-16 supported by good monsoon. Similarly, tur dal production is estimated at 4.23 million tonnes as against 2.56 million tonnes during the said period.

The decision to levy import duty has been taken as the wholesale prices of tur dal have come under pressure because of excessive output. In fact, in certain cases, farmers are not getting even the minimum support price (MSP) stipulated by the government.
