Nifty, Sensex recoup losses to end on a positive note; Sterlite Technologies, Wipro up by over 7 per cent

Indian benchmark indices Nifty and Sensex declined to intra-day lows of 9846.90 and 318,815.50, respectively, but staged a smart recovery in the closing hours. NSE’s Nifty 50 closed at 9,915.25, up by 0.42 per cent, while S&P BSE Sensex ended at 32,028.89, up by 0.39 per cent.
 
S&P BSE Mid-cap index stood at 15185.53, up by 0.04 per cent, while S&P BSE Small-cap was down by 0.05 per cent at 15992.63. India VIX stood at 11.08, down by 2.03 per cent.   
 
S&P BSE Energy was the top gaining index on the BSE, hitting its all-time high of 3701.69 intra-day on Friday. The index closed at 3696.79, up by 2.24 per cent. Reliance Industries was the top gaining stock in the index, up by 3.76 per cent at the closing hour on the launch of JioPhone and announcement of bonus share issue. However, Gujarat NRE Coke was the top loser in the index, down by nearly 7 per cent.

S&P BSE Teck was the second most profitable index on the BSE, up by 1.26 per cent at 5849. The index was largely driven by Sterlite Technologies, up by nearly 8 per cent at the closing hour over a 61 per cent rise in profit for the June quarter. Wipro was also up by about 7 per cent on the bourses on strong quarterly financial performance.  
S&P BSE Realty index was the top losing index, which ended at 2160.46, down by 1.10 per cent, with HDIL and DLF down by around 3 per cent.
