Volatile Day Ends Higher

The Indian markets saw swing trades after the declaration of WPI numbers and the Oil Ministry’s announcement on oil price hikes. However, the indices shrugged off all these negative cues and ended at the higher levels. The Nifty ended 43 points higher at 5742 and Sensex was up by 137 points at 19367.

The advance-decline ratio ended on the positive side by closing. On the NSE, 1732 shares closed in green, while 1558 shares ended the day in red.

Top 5 Nifty Gainers: Tata Motors closed the day with the top gains on NSE, up by 9.7%. Hindalco, BPCL, DLF and NMDC were among the other scrips gained strongly.

Top 5 Nifty Losers: HCL Tech was down by 2.1%, followed by BHEL, Reliance Infra, HDFC and Ranbaxy Labs.

9 out of the 13 sectoral indices ended in the green. Auto was the top gainer, up by 351 points. Oil & Gas was 241 points higher and Metals went up by 201 points. Consumer Durables also provided good support and closed 181 points up. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps were both up by 30 points.

The Asian markets closed in positives. Hang Seng was the top gainer, up by 269 points. The Nikkei market ended up by 183 points. Shanghai Composite and KOSPI also witnessed gains.

Buzzer: Wockhardt Pharma’s Q1 net dropped by 15% to Rs 323 crore, while its sales went up nominally. The stock was in an upper circuit of 5% at Rs 440.25.

Nifty Futures ended above the 5750 level, which is a bullish indicator for the next trading session.
