Nifty touches 10,800; Broader markets outperform

Post a highly volatile morning trading session, Sensex was seen trading near its day's high during the afternoon session. On Tuesday, Nifty rose by 36 points or 0.33 per cent to settle at 10,799.65 while Sensex gained by 187.24 points or 0.51 per cent to close at 36,674.52.

GVK Power & Infrastructure's stock locked in at its lower circuit of 5 per cent during today's trading session after it became known that an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) has been filed against the group under Section 3 of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Buying was witnessed in the banking and IT stocks whereas energy, metal, infra, FMCG and pharma stocks witnessed a drop.

Across the globe, Shanghai index gained by 0.37 per cent whereas Hang Seng, KOSPI and Nikkei fell by 1.38 per cent, 1.09 per cent and 0.44 per cent respectively. Trading sentiments seemed sour in the European markets as FTSE 100, DAX and CAC 40 were seen trading lower by 1.31 per cent, 1.48 per cent and 1.32 per cent after EU said that recovery will be uneven across member states with severe risks to economic outlook.

Stocks advancing on Sensex consisted of Bajaj Finance soaring by 7.84 per cent, IndusInd Bank gaining by 6.10 per cent, Bajaj Finserv rising by 4.98 per cent, Infosys increasing by 4.01 per cent, ICICI Bank rallying by 3.84 per cent, Axis Bank up by 3.09 per cent, etc. Sensex losers comprised NTPC dropping by 2.78 per cent, ITC declining by 2.73 per cent, Power Grid dipping by 2.58 per cent, Tata Steel decreasing by 2.54 per cent, ONGC falling by 2.15 per cent, Mahindra & Mahindra down by 1.86 per cent, etc.

Amongst BSE sectoral indices, IT index was the biggest gainer up by 2.10 per cent while Oil & Gas index was the biggest loser declining by 2.42 per cent. BSE small-cap index rose by 0.57 per cent and BSE mid-cap index gained by 0.58 per cent.
