Sensex, Nifty tumble; ONGC gains by more than 6 per cent, Shilpa Medicare jumps 7 per cent, Graphite India dips

On Wednesday, the domestic benchmark indices snapped their gaining streak as Sensex fell by 694.92 points or 1.56 per cent to close at 43,828.10 levels while Nifty declined by 196.75 points or 1.51 per cent to settle at 12,858.40 levels.

Recent market rallies and FIIs inflow led by positive developments related to the vaccine, paused as investors rushed to book profits during today’s trading session after the domestic markets reached an all-time high on a monthly basis.

In a weak market, LVB and ONGC were some of the buzzing stocks.

Meanwhile, L&T reported about receiving a large deal to build the longest bridge in India.

In the global markets, European indices such as FTSE 100 and DAX were trading down by 0.49 per cent and 0.33 per cent, respectively while CAC 40 traded flat with a negative bias. Asian indices such as Shanghai index and KOSPI fell by 1.19 per cent and 0.62 per cent, respectively while Hang Seng and Nikkei rose by 0.31 per cent and 0.50 per cent, respectively.

Sensex gainers consisted of ONGC that went up by 6.25 per cent, Power Grid increased by 0.33 per cent, and IndusInd Bank rose by 0.10 per cent.

Sensex draggers included Kotak Mahindra Bank that went down by 3.22 per cent, Axis Bank fell by 3.16 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries plunged 2.61 per cent, HDFC Bank weakened by 2.50 per cent, Bajaj Finance decreased by 2.49 per cent, Asian Paints slumped 2.41 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, only Oil & Gas index closed in green, up by 0.08 per cent. BSE Telecom index was the biggest loser, declining by 2.20 per cent. BSE Realty index fell by 2.19 per cent while BSE Bankex was down by 2 per cent.

In the broader markets, BSE Small-Cap index and BSE Mid-Cap index fell by 1.13 per cent and 1.76 per cent, respectively.
