Airtel jumps almost 3 per cent after TRAI reports of adding more subscribers than Jio in September

The shares of Bharti Airtel were trading in the green on Friday after Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its subscription data report revealed that for the month of September 2020, Airtel reigned supreme with more than 3.77 million subscriber addition, followed by Reliance Jio, which managed to add 1.46 million new subscribers in comparison.

Airtel increased its wireless subscribers from 322.8 million in the month of August to 326.6 million in the month of September, according to TRAI's subscription data report for the month of September. This becomes the second straight month wherein, Airtel user base has grown faster than Jio. September addition of 3.77 million subscribers in just one month is the largest by any telecom company in that span. 

Reliance Jio, on the other hand, went up from 402.6 million wireless subscribers in August to 404.1 million subscribers in September. This is an addition of 1.46 million subscribers, much lesser than Airtel. Even in the month of August, Airtel had added over 1 million more subscribers than Jio.

In terms of per cent growth of the user base, Vodafone Idea saw a monthly growth decline of 1.55 per cent whereas Airtel grew by 1.17 per cent month-on-month. Reliance Jio saw a growth of 0.03 per cent whereas BSNL grew 0.07 per cent in the month of September. The top three operators namely Jio, Airtel, and Vi held 35.1, 28.4, and 25.7 per cent of the market shares respectively.

At 2.38 pm on Friday, the stock of Bharti Airtel was trading at Rs 493.00, up by 2.72 per cent or Rs 13.05 per share on BSE.
