Pioneering The Management Movement

Bengaluru is house to some of the finest corporates in India. With that perspective in mind, what role is the BMA playing in the overall scheme of things?

The Bangalore Management Association (BMA) is a pioneer in the management movement of India. Established on the 10th October, 1953, it is affiliated to the All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi. It was launched as a professional body to study and promote the principles of management in more scientific way. As an independent, non-profit organisation, BMA provides a wide range of services aimed at enhancing managerial effectiveness. These include promotion and development of sound management practices suiting Indian conditions and to stimulate management thinking leading to excellence. The objectives of BMA as a centre of creative and nurturing activities are achieved through continuous organizing of the various seminars, workshops and research projects.

Can you take us through the activities of the BMA?

BMA is in the forefront among all Management Associations and is the oldest in the country and is also recognized as one of the best Management Associations. It continued bringing latest management thoughts, through its annual conventions, workshops, seminars, conclaves, summits and training programmes by inviting reputed Management Experts and Business Icons. Eminent personalities like Peter Drucker, Mother Th eresa, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Narayan Murthy, Founder Infosys, Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Former Chief Minister of Karnataka N Dharam Singh, His Excellency Dr H R Bharadwaj, Governor of Karnataka among many dignitaries who have participated in BMA’s events on various occasions. BMA has also played its role by recognizing and honouring the leaders who have made signifi cant contributions to the society such as Dr Raja Ramanna, Sudha Murthy, Dr Devi Shetty and many other dignitaries.

What are the various programmes that BMA has put through in order to ensure management excellence in Bengaluru?

BMA is building its own brand, by regularly organising the innovative management programmes to meet the aspirations of the managerial fraternity in Bangalore, the silicon valley of India, as well as emerging corporate capital of India since six decades.

How has the corporate landscape of Bengaluru changed over the past decade and how do you think will it change going forward?

No city, perhaps, exemplifies India’s growth potential better than Bangalore. The city, appropriately called the ‘science and technology capital of India’, houses some of the leading institutions in the world such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and a range of corporations engaged in Information Technology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Avionics, Engineering and Machine Tools, both in the public and private sectors. The broad economic base includes apparel, pharmaceutical companies, service and FMCG companies and extends to a vibrant Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) sector. No wonder then, that some of the biggest multinational corporations have set up research laboratories in Bangalore. The city is cosmopolitan, culturally diverse and is considered as one of the best cities in the world for management education.

Is the government doing enough to support organizations like the BMA?

Yes, Karnataka Government recognizes the important role of BMA and has allotted 10,000 sq. Ft. land in the prime location of electronic city phase 1 to build state of the art Management Development Centre (MDP) and the construction work is in progress.

What would be your key advice to corporate houses and people in control of businesses as the chairman of the BMA?

The Bangalore Management Association (BMA) is a pioneer in the management movement of India and this is the oldest and the first management association in India. So I would request corporates to have an association with BMA to increase their network and reach

Dr. Hari krishna Maram
Chairman-BMA (Bangalore Management Association)
