Markets close on a positive note
After opening the day on a positive note, Indian stock markets remained volatile throughout the day but finally ended in the green zone. Sensex and Nifty closed the day with gains of 0.41 and 0.27% respectively. The market gained momentum in the last one hour of trade on the back positive opening in the European markets.

The European are currently trading on a firm note. German and French stock markets are up as investors pick up defensive stocks as safe havens in this weak economic scenario.
Back home, BSE sectoral indices like Consumer Durables, IT, Tech and Oil & Gas are top gainers with an increase of 1% to 1.5% each. While Metal, Consumer Goods, Bankex and PSU indices closed the day with marginal gains of 0.20% to 0.65%.

FMCG and Auto indices were the top BSE losers, down by 1.32% and 1.05% respectively.
In Sensex, Coal India closed with the maximum gain of 3.71% on back of news that it has entered into a new coal price regime effective today. Bajaj Auto remained the top loser with a loss of 7.71% due to the lower sales data for December 2011. Hero Motorcorp was also down 3.42%.
Most of the stocks on the 30- share Sensitive Index closed on a negative note. Companies like M&M, NTPC, Hindalco Inds, HUL, BHEL and DLF are down anywhere between 1-2% each.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. Out of 3115 stocks traded, 1610 advanced while 1380 stocks declined. A total of 125 stocks remained unchanged.
