After trading in the red for the majority of the session, Indian equities closed higher on Thursday, the day of expiry. Gains in pharma and real estate outweighed losses in bank equities, particularly PSU banks. Midcaps and smallcaps gained ground.

In today's day trading session, the market witnessed a moderate start with Nifty 50 opening at 20,108.50 and Sensex at 66,963.20. Throughout the day, both indices displayed a relatively narrow trading range, with Nifty 50 reaching a high of 20,158.70 and a low of 20,015.85, while Sensex peaked at 67,069.89 and hit a low of 66,610.35. The closing values settled at 20,133.15 for Nifty 50 and 66,988.44 for Sensex, reflecting a subtle positive momentum. The percent change was marginal, standing at 0.18 per cent for Nifty 50 and 0.13 per cent for Sensex compared to the previous close.

On the domestic front, Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers of Indian stocks today, buying Rs 8,147.85 crore worth of shares. This helped to boost sentiment and push the markets higher.

The healthcare sector led the gains, posting an increase of 1.78 per cent. Following closely behind were the pharma and realty sectors, both exhibiting robust performances with gains more than 1.40 per cent. These sectors contributed significantly to the overall positive sentiment in the market. The private bank sector experienced a slight decline, ending the day in the red with a decrease of 0.19 per cent. Similarly, the PSU banks sector dipped in to the red, closing 1.10 per cent lower. Mid-caps and Small-Caps gained ground.
