Closing bell: As global markets nosedive, Sensex concludes with a 1,457-point loss; Nifty settles below 15,800

Besides, the global markets tumbled on fears of aggressive Fed policy tightening later this week.

Indian stocks opened 2 per cent lower on Monday with the rupee plunging to a new low of 78.28 per dollar.  

 

Besides, the global markets tumbled on fears of aggressive Fed policy tightening later this week. On Friday, the US government data showed that inflation reached 8.6 per cent in the 12-month ended in May, the steepest rise in consumer prices since December 1981 while the benchmark 10-year bond yield rose to 7.60 per cent, the highest level since February 2019.   

  

BSE Sensex closed with a huge fall of 1,456 points at 52,846 levels. BSE Midcap index sank 613 points to end the day at 21,876 levels. BSE Smallcap index too plunged 814 points to close at 25,043 levels. The top gainer on Sensex today was Nestle India. However, the Top Losers included Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Induslnd Bank, Tech Mahindra, and ICICI Bank.  

    

Nifty 50 also ended in one of the worst falls of 427 points to close at 15,774 levels. Similarly, Bank Nifty too nosedived 1,077 points and closed the day at 33,405 levels. The Top Gainers on the index were Nestle India and Bajaj Auto. The top losers were Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Motors, Induslnd Bank, and Hindalco Industries.  

    

The total stocks traded today were 3,613, out of which, 670 advanced and 2,825 stocks declined. There were 118 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 227 while 353 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that hit a new 52-week high is 90 while 213 stocks made a fresh 52-week low today.
