Here is how individual investors hold MF schemes

Individual investors are now the dominant force in the Indian Mutual Fund industry. Their share of AUM is higher than the institutional shareholders. Individual investors now hold a higher share of industry assets, i.e. 53.7 per cent in July 2019, compared with 51.9 per cent in July 2018. Institutional investors account for 46.3 per cent of the assets, with nearly 90 per cent as corporates.

Individual investors held Rs.13.86 lakh crore in mutual funds at the end of July 2019, an increase of 11.54 per cent over July 2018. Despite poor market conditions, individual investors have increased their share in equities. Investments in equity schemes have increased by 12.10 per cent over July 2018. In terms of percentage of their total assets, the equity now forms 69 per cent of their total assets, up from 68 per cent in the same month last year.


In terms of origination of individual assets, top 30 locations and distributors have taken the lion’s share. They contribute 62 per cent of the assets of individual investors.
