Sensex, Nifty witness volatility; Asian Paints & Dr Reddys Laboratories in focus; Cipla & Tata Steel weaken

On Tuesday, domestic benchmark indices witnessed volatility as Sensex and Nifty erased today’s gains to slip into the negative territory later in the day.  

Sensex ended at 50,363.96 levels, declining by 31.12 points or by 0.06 per cent lower than its previous close. Nifty fell by a mere 0.065 per cent or by 9.7 points to settle at 14,924 levels.  

During today's trading session, IT & telecom stocks gained while metal and finance stocks declined.  

In global markets, the majority of the Asian indices ended in positive territory. Shanghai Composite, KOSPI, Hang Seng and Nikkei rose by 0.78 per cent, 0.76 per cent, 0.67 per cent and 0.52 per cent, respectively. In the European market, DAX was up by 0.59 per cent, followed by FTSE 100, which was trading up by 0.53 per cent while CAC 40 traded flat with a positive bias.   

Sensex gainers included Asian Paints that surged 4.87 per cent, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories gained 2.44 per cent, HUL increased by 1.48 per cent, HCL Technologies inched higher by 1.43 per cent while TCS went up by 1.38 per cent, etc.  

Sensex losers were made up of Tata Steel that plunged 1.63 per cent, Cipla fell by 1.58 per cent, Larsen & Toubro decreased by 1.56 per cent, ICICI Bank declined by 1.38 per cent, SBI dipped by 1.37 per cent, etc.  

Amongst the sectoral indices on BSE, the IT index surged 1.35 per cent while the Teck index zoomed by 1.08 per cent, followed by the telecom sector, which rose by 0.99 per cent. While most of the domestic sectoral indices fell today, the metal index was the biggest loser, declining by 1.03 per cent, followed by the finance index, declining by 0.66 per cent.  

In today's trading session, BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.32 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap index increased by 0.40 per cent.
