Overnight, Wall Street indices fell sharply as the Federal Reserve's aggressive stance crushed the optimism. The Federal Reserve raised the key policy rate by 75 basis points, bringing the target range for the federal funds rate to 3.75-4 per cent.

Whereas the majority of global markets were significantly affected, gains in the telecommunication and banking sectors kept the Indian benchmark indices stable, despite heavy losses in information technology, power and utility stocks.

At 3:30 pm, the BSE Sensex edged down by 0.11 per cent, reaching a level of 60,836. The Nifty 50 index lost 0.17 per cent to the 18,052 level. On the Sensex, State Bank of India, Bharti Airtel and Titan were the Top Gainers, whereas Tech Mahindra, Power Grid Corporation of India and NTPC Ltd were the Top Losers.

Despite a decline in the main indices, broader indices were trading slightly higher. MAS Financial Services, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, surged more than 13 per cent after reporting strong quarter results and traded at a new 52-week high with a more than eight-fold rise in volume.
