Closing Bell: Indices are in bearish territory with Nifty slipping below the 15,900 level

After a tumultuous session on Friday, the domestic equity indices ended near the day's low.

After a tumultuous session on Friday, the domestic equity indices ended near the day's low. A sharp sell-off in the final hour of the trading session wiped out all profits and pushed global benchmarks down. Sectors that were in green include the auto, FMCG, and pharmaceutical industries while metal, financial services & banking sectors ended in the red.  

  

BSE Sensex closed in the red, losing on the fifth day by 136 points to end at 52,793 levels. BSE Midcap index, on the flip side, gained 170 points to end the day at 21,815 levels. BSE Smallcap index has also increased by 320 points to close at 25,315 levels. The top gainers on BSE Sensex today were Sun Pharmaceutical, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, Titan, ITC, and Reliance Industries. However, the Top Losers include State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, and Bajaj Finserv.  

  

Nifty 50 ended at 15,782 levels, slipping only by 25 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty ended with a loss of 410 points and closed the day at 33,121 levels. The top gaining stocks were Tata Motors, Titan, Sun Pharmaceutical, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hindustan Unilever. The top losing stocks were Shree Cement, Bajaj Finserv, Larsen & Toubro, NTPC, and BPCL.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,472, out of which, 2,145 advanced and 1,193 stocks declined. There were 134 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 288 while 236 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 51 while 116 stocks made a fresh 52-week low today.
