BSE Smallcap index underperformed broader markets, recording losses of 0.73 per cent to close at 26,158.79.

As the Centre cuts excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and diesel by Rs 6, several states have followed the suit by reducing VAT on petrol and diesel. Auto, realty, and logistics stocks are rallying on the bourses on the back of this positive news, being beneficiaries of the ease in petrol and diesel price. 

During Monday's opening bell, Indian markets were flat despite strong volatility, mirroring mixed global trends. On the domestic front, the auto index climbed 1 per cent to boost the broader markets, while metal stocks fell 8 per cent in early trading. The market's performance comes after the government announced an excise duty drop of Rs 8 per litre on petrol and Rs 6 per litre on diesel. 

At 11.30 am on Monday, the core equity indices i.e., Sensex and Nifty 50 were trading marginally higher amidst mixed global cues. The Asia Pacific markets showed mixed signs on Monday as global uncertainties continue to worry the investors. 

The frontline index S&P BSE Sensex opened in green today. Within the first 15 minutes of the day, it made a gain of 0.25 per cent.
