On Tuesday, most European indices fell as strong German inflation statistics rekindled concerns about central banks' monetary tightening tempo.

BSE Sensex closed at 55,566 levels, sinking by 359 points. On the contrary, BSE Midcap index increased by 112 points to end the day at 23,143 levels.

Indices witnessed strong selling pressure in the last half hour as Nifty lost over 120 points during this period. In the end, Nifty closed lower by 0.46 per cent while Sensex lost about 359 points. Nifty Midcap closed marginally negative whereas Nifty Smallcap surged 11.24 per cent.
