Smartphone shipments to India up by 15 per cent in Q4FY17

India witnessed a growth in the shipment of smartphones in the March quarter of 2017 by 15 per cent as compared to the same period in the previous year, the shipments in Q4FY17 amounted to 29 million units according to a research report. 

According to the report, 70 per cent of the market was captured by the top five brands in the segment, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Lenovo with a market share of 26 per cent, 13 per cent, 12 per cent, 10 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.  

In India, the mobile handset market in the country grew by six per cent in the Q4FY17, with the equal contribution of both the smartphones and feature phones. India is one of the largest smartphone markets, growing at a fast pace.     

The mid-end segment (Rs 15,000-20,000) of the mobile handset market grew by 158 per cent in this quarter on a yearly basis, with most of the growth in this category driven by Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Gionee, and Motorola. 

The premium segment (over Rs 30,000) of the market grew by 35 per cent in this quarter on a yearly basis, with Samsung contributing by 48 per cent to the market share, followed by Apple with a 43 per cent contribution. The other significant contributors to this segment were OnePlus, Oppo and Google.
