Sensex tanks 624 points even as RIL gains 10 pc

Despite a spectacular run-up by Reliance, the benchmark index BSE Sensex closed down at 36,958.16, down by 623.75 points or 1.66 per cent on Tuesday. The Nifty50 closed at 10,925.85, down by 183.80 points or 1.65 per cent.

Index heavyweights that pulled down the Sensex were HDFC twins, Infy, ITC and ICICI Bank, while the stocks that supported the index were Reliance and Sun Pharma. HDFC contributed negative 188.86 points to the Sensex, followed by HDFC Bank negative 129.64 points, Infy negative 97.14 points and ITC, ICICI Bank and L& T contributed approximately negative 60 points each. While on the other hand, Reliance contributed positive 358.13 points and Sun Pharma positive 16.58 points.

The most traded index Nifty Bank closed down by 702.80 points or 2.47 per cent at 27,729.10 with all components of the index trading in red. The stock that contributed most to the downfall were HDFC Bank contributing negative 252.84 points and ICICI Bank negative 138.92 points.

All sectoral indices closed in the red. Nifty Auto index dipped the most down by 3.95 per cent.

On Nifty, top gainers were IndiaBull Housing up by more than 14.26 per cent, followed by Reliance, Sun Pharma, GAIL and ZEEL. Among the top losers were Yes Bank down by 10.89 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finance down by 6.07 per cent, and M&M, Bajaj Finserv and Eicher Motor down by more than 5 per cent each.
