AUM of MF industry grew by 4.9 per cent in January

Total asset managed by Indian mutual fund industry grew by 4.9 per cent on monthly basis to touch Rs. 22.41 lakh crore at the end of January 2018. At the end of December 2017, the total AUM for industry stood at Rs. 21.26 lakh crore. The growth in liquid and money market funds has aided such rise in the total AUM of the industry. It has increased sharply by 28.5 per cent in the same duration to Rs. 3.81 lakh crore and now forms 17 per cent of total AUM as compared to 14 per cent recorded in December 2017. In the month of December 2017, it saw an outflow of Rs. 1,38,525 crore.

Investment growth in equity-based funds including equity-linked saving schemes remained tepid and grew at 2 per cent and 2.5 per cent, respectively. They both formed 35 per cent of total AUM of the industry at the end of January 2018. Income funds that formed the largest share of AUM of the industry have seen a continues decline in its AUM. After witnessing a decline of Rs. 60,151 crore in its AUM in the month of December 2017, the fall continued for the month of January 2018.

GILT is another area which has witnessed a decline in its AUM. Year till date (April-January) total outflow witnessed in this category is Rs. 1,181 crore. Going ahead, with the rise in government yields and volatility in equity market, there may be a decline in total AUM in the month of February 2018.
