Which funds did individual investors invest in June?

It’s a while now that retail investors have surpassed the institutional investors in terms of share of domestic mutual funds. For the month ending June 2019, individual investors held Rs. 14.03 lakh crore in mutual funds which is an increase of 14.38 per cent over June 2018. Now they hold almost 58 per cent of the total domestic AUM of Rs. 24.25 lakh crore.

Most of the individual investor’s AUM is in equity, it corners 69.2 per cent of his total AUM while a quarter is shared by the debt-oriented schemes.

Turbulence in the debt market has really dented the sentiment of the retail investors and the growth of investments in debt funds as seen a sharp downturn in June 2019. It grew at a rate of a mere 5 per cent while liquid and money market funds grew by 61 per cent.

Origination of Individual Assets

Individual assets have mainly come from the top 30 locations and are primarily distribution driven. 62 per cent of the assets of individual investors are from top 30 cities (T30), brought in by distributors. Direct investments amount to 18 per cent of individual assets, divided as 3 per cent from beyond T30 better known as B30 and 15 per cent from T30.
