Sensex, Nifty at record highs; Burger King gains 131 per cent on listing debut, ONGC jumps 5 per cent, Adani Green declines

Markets ended close to record highs as Sensex gained by 154.45 points or by 0.34 per cent to settle at 46,253.46 levels while Nifty rose by 44.30 points or 0.33 per cent to close at 13,558.15 levels.

Burger King gained by more than 130 per cent after making its listing debut on the exchanges as its shares zoomed to around Rs 138.40 per share on BSE, compared to its issue price of Rs 60 per share.

The shares of Larsen & Toubro gained after the company reported that it has secured orders from two prestigious clients for its building & factories business as well as power transmission & distribution business.

Volatility index i.e. India VIX gained by over 3 per cent, indicating increased volatility.

On the global front, Shanghai index and Nikkei gained by 0.66 per cent and 0.30 per cent, respectively, Hang Seng decreased by 0.44 per cent while KOSPI fell by 0.28 per cent. European indices such as FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40 were trading in the green, up by 0.44 per cent, 1 per cent and 0.96 per cent, respectively. The shares in the European markets, which gained as a decision to extend trade talks between Britain and the European Union kept investors’ hopes high of an eventual deal.

Sensex gainers included ONGC that jumped 4.91 per cent, Larsen & Toubro surged 4.61 per cent, NTPC increased by 2.15 per cent, ICICI Bank went up by 2.07 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries gained by 1.42 per cent, HCL Technologies rose by 1.39 per cent, Titan Company gained by 1.27 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of Mahindra & Mahindra that plunged 1.98 per cent, Bajaj Auto fell by 1.17 per cent, Tech Mahindra decreased by 1.14 per cent, Bajaj Finserv fell by 1.06 per cent, HDFC Bank declined by 0.90 per cent, RIL went down by 0.72 per cent, Maruti Suzuki fell by 0.57 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the Capital Goods index was the biggest sectoral gainer, up by 2.10 per cent. BSE Auto index and BSE Realty index fell by 0.95 per cent each. BSE Small-Cap index gained by 0.74 per cent and BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 0.79 per cent.
