Sensex, Nifty close in green; Oberoi Realty locks in at upper circuit, Britannia tumbles 6 per cent

Sensex, Nifty close in green; Oberoi Realty locks in at upper circuit, Britannia tumbles 6 per cent

Amidst a volatile trading session, on Tuesday, Sensex gained by 112.77 points or 0.28 per cent to close at 40,544.37 levels while Nifty ended up by 23.75 points or 0.20 per cent at 11,896.80 levels.

The domestic markets inched up higher during today’s trading session led by gains in IT, pharma, and auto stocks while selling pressure was seen in energy, FMCG, and metal stocks.

Heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, Infosys, HCL Tech, TCS, and Asian Paints contributed the most to the benchmarks in today's trade.

According to data on BSE, LIC reduced its stake in ICICI Bank to 8.87 per cent during Q2FY21 from 10.15 per cent in Q1FY21.

The initial public offering (IPO) of Equitas Small Finance Bank, which is a subsidiary of Equitas Holdings, was subscribed to 11.6 per cent today i.e. on its first day of bidding. It received bids for 1.36 crore equity shares against the offered size of 11.58 crore equity shares.

On the global front, investors’ sentiments remained mixed. Asian indices such as Shanghai index, Hang Seng and KOSPI ended in the green, up by 0.47 per cent, 0.11 per cent, and 0.50 per cent, respectively whereas, Nikkei closed down by 0.44 per cent.

Amongst European indices, FTSE 100 was seen trading in the positive territory, up by 0.28 per cent while DAX was trading down by 0.44 per cent while CAC 40 traded flat.

Oil prices tumbled due to the concerns regarding the resurgence of Coronavirus, which could create another obstacle in the expected recovery of fuel demand while an increase in the Libyan output only added to the already abundant supply.

On Tuesday, Indian Rupee ended lower at 73.46 against the US dollar as compared to Monday's close of 73,37.

Sensex gainers consisted of HCL Technologies that went up by 4.19 per cent, Tech Mahindra rose by 3.05 per cent, Asian Paints increased by 2.35 per cent, Bharti Airtel gained by 1.91 per cent, HDFC Bank increased by 1.73 per cent, Larsen & Toubro gained by 1.58 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers included ONGC that went down by 2.67 per cent, Power Grid fell by 1.44 per cent, NTPC declined by 1.22 per cent, RIL decreased by 0.93 per cent, HDFC was down by 0.86 per cent, Tata Steel decreased by 0.83 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the Realty index was the biggest gainer, up by 3.77 per cent whereas the Oil & Gas index was the biggest loser, down by 1.30 per cent. BSE Small-Cap Index and BSE Mid-Cap Index rose by 0.30 per cent and 0.47 per cent, respectively.
