JLR recalls vehicles in UK

Jaguar Land Rovers (JLR) voluntarily recalled nearly 44,000 cars in the UK as they were emitting higher than certified levels of carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions.

JLR also declared that it shall be contacting the owners of the affected vehicles in order to arrange free-of-charge repairs. This announcement was made after regulators discovered 10 models were emitting more than the permitted levels of the greenhouse gas. The scope of repairs involves software updates as well as physical alterations, with some Range Rover Evoque models possibly requiring new tyres.

The CO2 performance variability was discovered by UK’s Vehicle Certification Agency. The findings were then reported by JLR to the country's Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The recall will affect several models, most of which run on petrol.

While the recall in isolation does not serve a notable financial blow to the company, it does come at an inopportune moment as the company is already battling headwinds for associated with Brexit. Earlier this year, the company announced ~ 4,500 job cuts owing to subdued global sales.

All European vehicle manufacturers are under pressure to reduce the average emissions of their new cars from 118.5g of CO2 per kilometre to less than 95g by 2021.

On Thursday, the stock of Tata Motors opened at Rs. 181.00 per share and hit a high and low of Rs. 182.30 and Rs. 177.65, respectively. The stock closed at Rs. 179.70, down 1.05 per cent.
